ROGER BARKLEY

I. The small town boy from Iowa

Roger left his home in Odebolt, Iowa at the age of 17, full of dreams, to pursue a career in broadcasting.

He held professional positions as a radio-announcer and Director of Programs in Mankato, Minnesota; Fairmont; Denver; Salt Lake City, Dallas and finally, Los Angeles.

II. Lohman and Barkley

Roger was teamed with Al Lohman in a legendary 25-year partnership on KFI Radio in Los Angeles. They entertained and informed in the morning commute time, as well as hosted two time Emmy Award winning television variety show. The pair appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Hollywood Squares and worked the famous Cocoanut Grove nightclub on numerous occasions.

III. KABC

More recently, Barkley was a co-host on the "Ken and Barkley Company" on KABC radio. The show was consistently rated #1 during Roger’s tenure, as was the Lohman and Barkley show.

IV. Endeavors

Roger Barkley served as Master of Ceremonies for nearly 200 events each year, time he donated, to worthy causes. The Roger Barkley Community Foundation has given over $700,000 to hospitals, youth activities, student scholarships and research; he was generosity personified. Roger’s final venture was as a restaurateur with partner Jim Campbell, opening several restaurants bearing his name, "The Barkley".

V. The Story Man

A gifted communicator, Roger possessed a unique characteristic in that he could communicate and relate to people through radio, television and the written word. His homespun stories remind the reader of the values he was raised with and never lost, as he wove them quietly into his tales.

Roger’s wit, humor and honesty endeared him to the public. He was always thought of as a man of great integrity and goodness.

VI. Highlights

The foreword to the book was affectionately written by Roger’s longtime friend, actor/comedian, Tim Conway.
